Ancient Naples

cribs itinerary

"Naples is the crib and the crib is Naples". The point of departure is Piazza del Gesù which takes the name from the Church of the Gesù Nuovo. We walk along via Benedetto Croce, crossed few meters we will be in front of the arch that introduces in the complex of S. Chiara. Here is preserved the most classical crib of the Jesuits, which answers to the canons of the church, but equally bursts out the popularity of the scenes full of characters. Returning in via Benedetto Croce. Few meters ahead, on the left, to the intersection with via S. Sebastiano, we will be in front of the Church of S. Marta: the crib is placed on the back wall of a room, its characteristic is the cave illuminated of proper light. We return in via Benedetto Croce and we continue toward Piazza S. Domenico Maggiore where there is the homonym basilica, after about ten meters, we turn on the right at via Paladino to reach the Church of Gesù Vecchio which preserves a nineteenth-century crib characterized by figures of real height. To the exit, proceeding in the direction of via S. Biagio dei Librai we can see the first shops that have in exposure shepherds, animals, trinkets, equipments and other objects for the cribs. On the left, there is the famous via S. Gregorio Armeno. Here is the centre of production and sale of the shepherds. Crossed the whole little street we arrive in front of the entrance of the Church of S. Lorenzo Maggiore where are preserved two glass showcases containing a hundred of hulls of walnut with inside little scenes of the crib and of biblical inspiration. Interesting in this church is a representation of Giotto’s school of a nativity with the Virgin on the bed of the birth and the washing of Jesus. Ahead, there is the church of S. Gaetano, here S. Alfonso dei Liguori lived, he is the author of "Quanno nascette ninno a Betlemme" and “ Tu scendi dalle stelle". In the Church of Santo Spirito, in via Toledo, exists "'or presebbio che se fricceca" (that is with mobile figures)the most famous of the city. Continuing for via Toledo up to Piazza Carità, we turn on the left via C. Battisti toward the palace where has centre the " Central Post office". Facing, crossed via Monteoliveto and there is via S. Maria la Nova, in the homonym cloister, realized by the "Association Friends of the crib", takes place an interesting show of the greater contemporary artisans (from 8/12 to 6/1). In the gallery Umberto an artisan builds a crib in eighteenth-century style, interesting because with circular structure and slightly but symbolically to spiral upward. It’s important to see the crib of the Bank of Naples, all original pieces of the '700, exposed to Royal Palace. In S. Maria del Parto, in Mergellina, are guarded, in a narrow space, five statues belonging to one of the cribs realized by Giovanni da Nola in the '500. In the Museum of S. Martino on the hill of S. Elmo in the nucleous of the crib there is a rich collection of single figures of characters, often time a caricature, as in the 40 deformed shepherds of the legato Carrara; the numerous and refined scenes of groups; the crib hidden within a cork mastodon representing the Temple of Neptune to Paestum, Lorenzo Taglioni’s work; the Carthusian monks' crib, that of majolica Giustiniani, the rich crib Ricciardi linked to the State in 1917 and the famous, immense theatre of Cuciniello, whose donation goes back to 1877, then, the donation Perrone, had in 1971 to which are linked purchases, legacies and donations of smaller entity and the precious silver and coral little crib, in "under delivery" by the Royal Palace of Caserta since 1948. Must not be forgotten the pending Virgin of the most ancient Neapolitan crib of 1340, the statues of the crib of 1478 of the two Alemannis for the Church of S.
