It is the most important Italian mineralogical museum, well-known abroad for the historic and scientific value of its collections. Inaugurated by Ferdinando IV di Borbone in 1801, at present has further 30.000 champions such as a general collection of 20.000 specimens from all the world, classified according to their chemical composition; a vesuvian collection with about 6000 champions; the Vesuvian collection of medals with nineteenth-century pieces coined in material lava; a collection of big crystals and other collections of tuffs of Campania; meteorites and mineralogical instruments of historical interest. To remember a couple of big crystals of hyaline quartz coming from Madagascar, belonged to to the Royal Family, a Satyr head engraved by Canova in a champion made of marble of Carrara and quartz and a goniometer of A. Scacchi of the first half of the 800.
