Founded by Gioacchino Murat in 1811, the museum includes an important collection “malacologica” with a great number of Mediterranean and exotic species, the collection of over three thousand of embalmed birds and the collection of the vertebrates, among which a skeleton of a common whale, long twenty metres, runs aground on the beaches of Naples in 1928. Of relief is a collection of sponges and mother-of-pearl, the mummified crocodiles of ancient Egypt and a skeleton of elephant that belonged to the royal family.
